Vieira named Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Arlin Vieira has joined the Marshall athletic department as the Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics. Christian Spears, who was introduced as the Thundering Herd’s new Director of Athletics on February 25, made the announcement Monday.

“Arlin spent meaningful time with some of the best people at Pitt, learning from industry leaders in external initiatives and life skills,” Spears said. “She was coached at an extremely high level as a member of the Pitt Dance team and knows the value of connecting the student-athlete experience on campus, in the community and within the athletic department. She brings great character, great attitude and great intellect to our team. I’m excited she chose to join us at Marshall.”

Vieira, 22, will have job responsibilities that include special projects with a focus on the student-athlete experience, and serving as Spears’ executive assistant.

“My goal while pursuing my undergraduate degree was to learn the ins and outs of each department within the athletic department,” Vieira said. “I spent four years in six roles learning how the operations and responsibilities connected and influenced the others. I did all of this while being a student-athlete at the University of Pittsburgh.

“When the opportunity arose to come to Marshall, I jumped at the chance to use the knowledge I collected from incredible mentors and share it with a community filled with pride and tradition. This community is one that embraces each other with open arms.”

Vieira received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, with a dual major of Finance and Marketing and a certificate in Sports Management. She worked with the Pitt Cathy and John Pelusi Family Life Skills Program in student-athlete development and as an alumni engagement intern. She helped Pitt Athletics as a sports camp intern. Vieira also worked in the Pitt football program as a recruiting assistant and office assistant. She volunteered for Pitt’s equipment staff and learned about broadcasting in the hands-on classroom of the renowned screenwriter, playwright and producer, Kevin Michael Smith.

Vieira was captain of the University of Pittsburgh Dance Team and held the position as the team’s social media manager. In 2022, she was voted Gold Standard Teammate of the Year at the Pitt Panthers’ Choice Awards.

“Extremely grateful would be an understatement when discussing the opportunity to work alongside of Christian Spears,” Vieira said. “Ask him about the student-athlete experience and championship planning and watch his passion shine through — you will immediately get a glimpse into my day-to-day and see his love for people, teams and community. We all get better when Christian is involved, and I am excited to share in the contagious and energizing spirit at Marshall.”
